The last few week has seen a rise in the number of clients attending the clinic with acute mid back, lower back and rib cage pain.  Many of these clients attending the clinic have mentioned that these injuries or flare ups have occurred following a bout of flu, the common cold and consequently spending more time resting at home to get over these illnesses.

Coughing and sneezing results in an increase in intra abdominal pressure that results in an increased load on the spinal discs.  Associated with coughing and sneezing is an increased workload in the joints and soft tissues of the spine and thorax.  In some situations clients have aggravated facet joints, discs, costovertebral & costotransverse joints, as well as straining associated muscles.

In many cases, once the coughing and sneezing subsides, there has been a reduction in one of the aggravating factors.  If the above story sounds like you or someone that you know, then it might be time to book an appointment with your Osteopath to undergo some manual therapy.
