Plank to side plank assessment and exercise is one of the strategies we use when reviewing an individual who has been experiencing back pain. This is a progression on the 4 point kneeling position with hip extension or hand raise to further challenge the body.
The individual will have the hand on hip and the aim is to have the pelvis and trunk move as one from 3 point plank to side plank. Looking at these 2 videos we can see an asymmetry from one side to the next – this exercise could be regressed to a standing wall to side plank – it can be progressed from plank – side plank (left) – plank – side plank (right)
