Implementing The Landmine Press To Restore Vertical Pressing Patterns – Blog Post By Osteopath Heath Williams.

There are many clients who present to Principle Four Osteopathy reporting an inability to perform overhead loaded movements due mobility restrictions or pain. In many cases our clients will have issues with both. It is essential that individuals who experience pain with overhead push/pull movements or have restrictions in full overhead range of motion and have been thinking about adding overhead push pull exercises into their program have this looked at by a qualified health professional to determine the cause and assist you with a treatment and management plan that will have you moving towards your health and fitness exercise goals.

Typically when someone presents to our clinic who is having trouble with overhead pressing or would like to add this to their routine but has pain or lacks the mobility, we will undertake the following as part of our consultation:

  1. Detailed case history to determine the causation, aggravating triggers and goals
  2. Detailed movement assessment to determine a diagnosis, determine what movements can be performed, what needs to be modified and the capacity of the individual and their shoulder
  3. Treatment and management that may include manual therapy, self management strategies and exercise prescription/strength and conditioning. We will look to get your started on a program that has you moving towards your goals.

Below is an example of the landmine press which can be used as a strategy to assist our clients who are wanting to build some strength in their shoulder girdle but are having issues with overhead pressing, but are able to tolerate pressing load at an alternative (less of an angle) position.
