The shrugs and face pulls are two exercises that I often don’t see many of my weight training clients performing as part of their regular exercise routine and I am not sure why. Both of these exercises are integral to ensuring healthy shoulders from my point of view because they incorporate the often forgotten traps (shrug exercise) and also rotator cuff and all the other scapular muscles (face pulls). I will often prescribe these as warm up and accessory exercises that focus more on higher reps/volume 10-20 repetitions. These exercises are always often part of my return to performance program for shoulders and clients will be asked to perform these or variations of these in their rehab or general S&C program.
