What to Expect at Your First Osteopathy Appointment in Melbourne CBD
Booking your first osteopathy appointment can feel easier when you know what will happen. Your visit is a chance to explain the problem, discuss what you want to return to and ask questions before any assessment or treatment begins.
At Principle Four Osteopathy, an initial consultation includes time for your health history, a physical and movement-based assessment, discussion of the findings and, where suitable, treatment and practical advice. Your osteopath will explain each stage and adapt the appointment to your needs, comfort and consent.
· Initial consultations are typically 60 minutes; follow-up appointments usually take 35-45 minutes.
· Bring relevant imaging or reports, referral letters, a medication list and any notes that help explain your symptoms.
· Assessment and treatment are individual. You can ask questions, decline a technique or change your consent at any time.
· A GP referral is not required for a private appointment, although some Medicare and compensation arrangements require paperwork.
A Clear, Comfortable Start to Your Care
The first appointment is designed to build a useful picture of your concern rather than rush straight into treatment. Your osteopath will ask how the problem began, what makes it better or worse, how it affects work, sleep, exercise or daily life, and what you would like to change.
The conversation also covers relevant medical history, previous injuries, current care and medications. These details help the practitioner decide which assessment is appropriate and whether osteopathic care is a suitable starting point. If another clinician, further investigation or a different form of care is more appropriate, that will be discussed with you.
This page is for new patients, people returning after a long break and anyone helping a family member prepare for an appointment at our Collins Street clinic. A friend, family member or support person is welcome to attend if that helps you feel more comfortable.
What to Bring to Your First Appointment
You do not need to arrive with a complete medical file, but a few useful items can make the consultation more efficient:
· Relevant X-ray, MRI or ultrasound reports, whether printed or available digitally
· Referral letters or reports from your GP, specialist or another health professional
· A current list of medications and important medical conditions
· Notes about when the symptoms began, what affects them and what activities are difficult
· Private health, Medicare CDM, WorkCover, TAC or DVA details when they apply to your appointment
· Comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily
If you do not have imaging or a referral, you can still book a private osteopathy consultation. Bring what is available and let the clinic know if you are unsure whether particular paperwork is required.

1. Tell Us Before You Arrive Contact the clinic before your appointment if you have specific access needs, are attending under a compensation scheme, have recently had surgery, are pregnant, or have received new medical advice that may affect assessment or treatment. Sharing this information helps the team prepare appropriately. |
|
2. What to Do Plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early so you can check in and complete any required paperwork without using your consultation time. Wear or bring clothing you can move in, and make a short note of the main questions you want answered. |
|
3. Good News You remain involved in decisions throughout the appointment. Your osteopath will explain what they are assessing and why. If clothing needs to be adjusted to examine an area, privacy and professional draping will be maintained, and alternatives can be discussed. |

What Happens at Your First Osteopathy Appointment?
- Step 1 – Discuss Your Symptoms, History and Goals Your osteopath will begin by listening to your reason for attending. They may ask about the location and behaviour of your symptoms, previous episodes, work and activity demands, general health, medications and any care you are already receiving.
The purpose is to understand the problem in context and identify anything that changes how the appointment should proceed. It is also your opportunity to explain what matters most to you, such as working more comfortably, returning to training or managing an everyday task.
- Step 2 – Complete a Physical and Movement Assessment The assessment is selected for your presentation. It may include observing how you stand or move, checking the comfortable movement of relevant joints and assessing areas of tenderness, strength or control. The practitioner may examine more than the painful area when another region or movement appears relevant.
You will be told what each part involves before it is performed. If a test is uncomfortable or you prefer not to continue, say so. Assessment should be a collaborative process, not something done without explanation.
- Step 3 – Discuss Findings, Treatment and a Practical Plan After the assessment, your osteopath will explain the working impression and the options available. Where osteopathic care is suitable, the first visit may include hands-on treatment, movement or exercise advice, and practical guidance for work, sport or daily activity.
Not every appointment follows the same formula. Some people need a stronger rehabilitation focus, while others may benefit from short-term activity changes or referral for medical, dental, imaging or other professional input. The plan should be clear enough that you understand what to do next and how progress will be reviewed.

What Should You Wear to an Osteopathy Appointment?
Choose comfortable clothing that lets you move without restriction. Activewear, loose trousers, shorts and a T-shirt are practical options. If you are coming from work, you can bring a change of clothes.
You will only be asked to adjust clothing when it would genuinely help the assessment or treatment. The practitioner will explain the reason, maintain your privacy and offer appropriate draping. You can ask for another approach or decline at any point.
Will Osteopathic Treatment Be Painful?
Osteopathic care is adapted to the person and should remain within an agreed level of comfort. Some areas may already be tender, and certain techniques or movements can feel unfamiliar, so tell your osteopath what you are feeling during the appointment. Treatment can be modified or stopped whenever needed.
Mild short-term soreness or fatigue can occasionally occur after hands-on care, similar to the feeling after unfamiliar exercise. Ongoing or marked worsening is not an expected goal of treatment. Contact the clinic if you are concerned about your response or need advice about the next step.
How Long Is an Appointment?
An initial consultation is typically 60 minutes. This allows time for a detailed history, assessment, explanation, treatment where appropriate and personalised advice. Follow-up appointments usually run for 35-45 minutes, depending on the presentation and agreed plan.
Appointment times can be used differently from one visit to the next. A review may focus on reassessment and hands-on care, exercise progression, movement retraining or planning for work and activity demands.
How Many Osteopathy Appointments Will You Need?
There is no reliable fixed number for every person or condition. The recommendation depends on what is being managed, how long it has been present, your goals, relevant health factors and how the problem responds to care.
After the initial assessment, your osteopath will discuss a realistic plan rather than committing you to an open-ended course of treatment. Progress should be reviewed, and the approach adjusted if the expected changes are not occurring. This may involve changing treatment, placing more emphasis on rehabilitation or recommending another provider or investigation.
Exercises, Imaging and Coordinated Care
Home exercises are prescribed when they are likely to support your recovery, movement or capacity between appointments. They should suit your current ability, available time and goals. Ask for clarification if an exercise is uncomfortable or difficult to fit into your routine.
You do not need routine imaging before seeing an osteopath. If existing scans or reports are relevant, bring them with you. When further investigation or specialist input appears clinically appropriate, your osteopath can explain why and discuss referral options.
With your consent, the clinic can communicate with your GP, specialist or another practitioner to support coordinated care. Reports for insurers, employers or case managers may also be available, with fees depending on the work required.
Fees, Rebates and Compensation Appointments
Private health rebates may be available depending on your fund and level of cover, with on-the-spot HICAPS claiming available for eligible services. Medicare rebates may apply when you attend under a GP-managed Chronic Disease Management plan. Check the current fees and rebates information or contact your insurer before the appointment if you need certainty about your benefit.
Principle Four Osteopathy accepts WorkCover, TAC and DVA referrals. Bring your claim number, referral and any approval documents to your first appointment. If a WorkCover or TAC claim is still pending, appointments may be billed privately until approval is confirmed, so contact the clinic beforehand to understand the current arrangement.
