What Is Pelvic Instability?
Pelvic instability is commonly seen in pregnant and post partum women. Often it is difficult to know who is likely to suffer from pelvic instability until the woman progresses in their pregnancy. Common signs and symptoms can include aches and pains around the pelvis, feeling unstable or weak around the lumbopelvic area and discomfort with walking or with initiation of movement following rest. Throughout and following pregnancy there are many hormonal and physical changes that occur to prepare the female for birth. As the female progresses through the second and third trimester their body produces more hormones that result in the ligamentous structures becoming more lax. This is all very much part of a normal pregnancy, however in some women, this means that the passive support normally provided by the ligaments can place more load through ones structures and ask the surrounding muscular system to work harder.
Diagnosis is typically made from the clients case history and physical assessment. Treatment and management can include a combination of hands on manual therapy, prescription of stretches and exercises as well as possible prescription of a stability belt. The goal of treatment and management is often focused on reducing the aggravation of complaint and helping the pregnant client feel more comfortable throughout the remainder of the pregnancy. Following child birth the pelvic instability is likely to stay around for some time and this will be managed through conservative treatment approaches such as activity modification, support pants and gentle strengthening exercises.
