WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?
Shockwave therapy, more commonly known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), offers a non-invasive treatment solution for long-term insertion and soft tissue pathologies.
Your initial osteopathy and shockwave consultation involves your osteopath taking a detailed case history and assessment. Treatment and management will incorporate shockwave therapy, manual therapy and exercise prescription.
Your osteopath will advise you on whether they feel you will benefit from shockwave therapy-only sessions or whether they feel a combined osteopathy and shockwave therapy session is preferred.
Common conditions that Shockwave therapy may help:
Most individuals will know within 3-4 sessions if shockwave is helping them. We usually recommend between 3-6 shockwave therapy sessions. If you are unsure if shockwave therapy is suitable for your condition, please contact us or click the link to read more: Shockwave Patient Guide Flyer.

How MUCH DOES SHOCKWAVE THERAPY COST?
We offer shockwave therapy as a treatment to help patients with the healing process for pain or soreness related to musculoskeletal disorders.
For it, most patients can expect to pay the following:
INITIAL SHOCKWAVE CONSULTATION
50 - 60 MINUTES- An initial consultation must be undertaken for first-time clients.
FOLLOW-UP SHOCKWAVE THERAPY SESSION
15 - 20 MINUTES (SHOCKWAVE ONLY)- An initial consultation must be undertaken for first-time clients.
COMBINED OSTEOPATHY AND SHOCKWAVE TREATMENT
35 - 40 MINUTES- Your practitioner will assess you and determine whether osteopathy is required in follow-up consultations.
HOW DOES SHOCKWAVE THERAPY WORK?
Radial shockwave therapy delivers high-energy waves through the skin via an external handheld device. These shock waves reach the affected muscle, tendon, bone or other soft tissues without the need for surgery.
The treatment works in several ways. Firstly, it may help reduce pain by modulating nerve activity, including the release of substance P, a chemical involved in pain signalling. Shockwave therapy may also stimulate healing by increasing blood flow to the injured area. In doing so, it supports tissue repair and tissue regeneration.
A further effect is known as cavitation. This occurs when microscopic changes within damaged tissue encourage the body to remove unhealthy cells and replace them with healthier tissue. Whilst shockwave therapy is not suitable for every condition, when combined with other treatment approaches it can be an effective treatment that improves blood circulation and pain relief.

WHAT’S INVOLVED: YOUR TREATMENT PLAN
Should your Melbourne osteopath feel that you may benefit from shockwave therapy treatment, they will discuss this with you and outline the suggested treatment plan. Usually, the shockwave therapy treatment process involves treating the site of pain by placing the applicator against the skin. During the initial phase of shockwave therapy treatment, there may be some pain. However, this indicates correct targeting of the problem area. During the later phases of shockwave therapy treatment, you may feel only mild discomfort.
Each shockwave therapy treatment at Principle Four Osteopathy may last approximately 10 – 15 minutes. During this time, you may receive between 1,500 and 3,000 shockwaves, depending on the region being addressed and the suggested treatment protocol. It is usually recommended that individuals undergo between 3-6 shockwave therapy sessions with our Melbourne osteopath.
Shockwave therapy treatments may be carried out every 5-8 days, and if you experience any discomfort after the session, icing and analgesia may help.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does shockwave therapy hurt?
Most patients experience mild discomfort while the shockwave is applied to the injured area. Particularly when treating a chronic condition. However, because the treatment uses the external application of high-energy acoustic waves generated by compressed air, the sensation is brief.
Can I return to work or sport after treatment?
In most cases, because shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime, many patients can return to work straight after their appointment.
What if I've had shockwave therapy elsewhere and it didn't help?
If you’ve had shockwave treatment before and it hasn’t worked, don’t worry. We combine shockwave treatment with osteopathic assessment, manual therapy, and exercise rehabilitation to directly address the factors contributing to your symptoms.
