Appointments & What to Expect
What should I bring to my first appointment?
For your first visit, please bring any relevant imaging (X-rays, MRI or ultrasound reports), referral letters (if applicable), a list of current medications, and notes about your symptoms or pain patterns. This helps us gain a clear understanding of your condition and tailor your assessment and treatment appropriately. We’ll also explain our process and answer any questions before starting hands-on care.
How long will my appointment take?
Initial consultations are typically 60 minutes, allowing time for a detailed history, assessment, treatment, and personalised advice. Follow-up appointments usually run for 35–45 minutes, depending on your condition and treatment plan.
How many treatments will I need?
This varies depending on your condition, goals, and how long the issue has been present. Some people notice improvement within 1–3 sessions, while more complex or long-standing problems may require a structured program of care. After your initial assessment, we’ll discuss a realistic plan and expected timeline.
Do I need to arrive early?
Yes. We recommend arriving 5–10 minutes early so you can check in, complete any required paperwork, and start your appointment feeling relaxed.
Can I bring a friend or family member?
Yes. If having someone with you makes you more comfortable, they are welcome to attend the consultation. Most clients prefer privacy during physical assessments, but this is entirely your choice.
Treatment Experience & Comfort
Will osteopathy be painful?
Osteopathic treatment is generally gentle and should not be painful. Some techniques may feel unfamiliar, and mild post-treatment soreness can occur — similar to muscle soreness after exercise. We always tailor treatment to your comfort level and explain what to expect.
Will I need to undress?
Only if it helps with assessment or treatment. If clothing needs to be adjusted, we ensure professional draping and privacy at all times and clearly explain what we are assessing and why.
How active will my treatment be?
This depends on your condition and goals. Some people benefit mainly from hands-on care, while others require a more active rehabilitation approach. We discuss this with you and adjust your treatment as you progress.
Conditions We Commonly Treat
Do you treat office or desk-related pain?
Yes. Many Melbourne CBD clients experience pain related to prolonged sitting, workstation setup, and repetitive computer use. We assess posture, movement, and ergonomics, combining manual therapy with targeted exercise and practical advice to reduce pain and prevent recurrence.
Can osteopathy help with headaches or migraines?
Yes. Osteopathy can help by addressing tension, joint stiffness, and movement restrictions in areas such as the neck, upper back, and jaw. Treatment often includes hands-on care, posture education, movement strategies, and lifestyle advice.
Do you treat children and adolescents?
Yes. We regularly treat children and adolescents for sports injuries, posture-related discomfort, and growth-related conditions. All treatment is age-appropriate and clearly explained to both the child and parent.
Do you treat older adults?
Absolutely. Many clients seek osteopathic care for joint stiffness, mobility concerns, balance issues, or persistent pain. Treatment is tailored to comfort, safety, and individual goals.
Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Osteopathy is safe during pregnancy when provided by a qualified practitioner. We use gentle, modified techniques to support comfort, mobility, and postural changes throughout pregnancy.
Treatment Approach & Philosophy
Do you only use hands-on treatment?
No. While hands-on treatment is important, our approach also includes exercise prescription, movement retraining, and education when appropriate. The aim is improved function and long-term outcomes, not just short-term symptom relief.
Will I be given exercises to do at home?
Often, yes. Exercises are prescribed when they are likely to support recovery or reduce recurrence. They are tailored to your condition, ability, and lifestyle.
Is osteopathy evidence-based?
Modern osteopathy integrates current research, clinical expertise, and individual patient response. Treatment is adapted to each person rather than applied as a one-size-fits-all approach.
How is osteopathy different from physiotherapy or chiropractic care?
While there is overlap, osteopathy takes a whole-body approach that considers structure, movement, and function together. Treatment decisions are guided by assessment findings and clinical reasoning, rather than relying on a single technique.
Safety, Risks & Outcomes
Are there risks associated with osteopathic treatment?
Osteopathic treatment is generally very safe. Mild soreness or fatigue can occasionally occur. We assess thoroughly and explain any relevant risks before treatment begins.
Can treatment make my pain worse?
Temporary changes in symptoms can occur as the body adapts, but treatment should not cause ongoing worsening. We closely monitor your response and adjust care as needed.
What if treatment doesn’t help?
If progress is not as expected, we reassess your condition and discuss alternative options. This may include modifying treatment, recommending imaging, or referring you to another health professional.
How soon should I expect results?
Some clients notice improvement quickly, while others require a more gradual approach. We discuss realistic expectations early and review progress regularly.
Referrals, Imaging & Collaboration
Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath?
No. In Australia, you can book directly without a GP referral. A referral is only required if you wish to access Medicare rebates under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan.
Can you refer me for imaging or to another specialist?
Yes. If imaging or specialist input is clinically appropriate, we will discuss this with you and facilitate referrals as part of your care.
Do you diagnose conditions or just treat symptoms?
We conduct a thorough assessment to arrive at a working diagnosis and identify contributing factors. Treatment is guided by this assessment rather than treating symptoms in isolation.
Will you communicate with my GP or other health providers?
Yes. With your consent, we can provide reports or updates to your GP, specialist, or other practitioners to support coordinated care.
Can you provide reports for insurers or employers?
Yes. We regularly prepare reports for insurers, employers, and case managers. Fees may apply depending on the complexity and time involved.
Fees, Rebates & Compensation
Can I claim osteopathy through private health insurance or Medicare?
Yes. Most private health funds offer rebates, and we provide on-the-spot HICAPS claiming depending on your level of cover. Medicare rebates may be available under a GP-managed CDM plan.
Do you treat WorkCover, TAC, or DVA patients?
Yes. We accept WorkCover, TAC, and DVA referrals. Please bring your claim details and referral paperwork to your first appointment.
What if my WorkCover or TAC claim is still pending?
If a claim has not yet been approved, appointments are billed privately until approval is confirmed. Billing arrangements can be reviewed once approval is in place.
Do you treat workplace injuries differently?
The clinical approach remains patient-centred, but workplace injuries often involve additional documentation, insurer communication, and return-to-work planning.
Can you assist with return-to-work planning?
Yes. We regularly assist with functional assessments, graded return-to-work planning, and communication with employers or insurers.
