Working Towards Wellbeing

I recently undertook the Level 1 and 2 Wellness Coaching Course that was ran by Wellness Coaching Australia as part of both my own self development (personally and professionally), but also to improve my skills as a practitioner.  Wellbeing is a current buzzword at the moment both in the health and fitness industry, but also corporate work environment.  People are either searching for wellbeing or looking to provide services that help with ones wellbeing.  I thought I would take this opportunity to highlight Seligman’s five elements of wellbeing that I was introduced to on the Level 1 Wellness Coaching Course.   Ideally we can identify with and have these 5 elements as part of our life in order to move towards or achieve wellbeing.

Seligman’s Five Elements Of Wellbeing

Positive emotions – we all know how good it is to feel positive.  In order to achieve wellbeing we should ideally have more positive emotions than negative emotions within our daily lives.

Engagement – being interested and engaged in life is essential.  We need to surround ourselves in and partake in things that interest us and engage us.

Positive relationships – we all know how important it is to have people around us and relationships that are positive.  Positive relationships allows us to feel support, support others and continue to thrive as people.

Meaning – understanding the meaning as to what and why we are or want to do or be something is essential to wellbeing.  Without meaning, why do we do the things we do?

Accomplishment – accomplishing something and achieving satisfaction is an important part of wellbeing.  We must be able to enjoy being able to achieve things in our life.

When it comes to working with clients in my osteopathy practice, often many people come with a specific goal i.e. getting out of pain or to improve something with regards to movement and performance.  In addition to this they often have other health and wellbeing desires that we talk about.  Often in these conversations we will discuss what the meaning of these might be, what it might feel to achieve those health and wellbeing goals, who do they have around them that can positively support them and how would they acknowledge or celebrate success in achieving these goals.  Understanding these 5 elements can provide some structure and guidance and encourage both ourselves and/or our clients to include these elements in their life if they are wanting to achieve wellbeing.
