Whats Your Grip Strength Like?

Grip training is probably one of those key areas that we often forget to include some isolated or grip specific exercise into our program.  Every time we handle a weight we are training our grip, however we often forget to vary how we train our grip 9 times out 10.  Varying your grip training in your program could be as simple as vary your hand hold on a weight i.e. changing grip positions for a chin up or push movement, changing the thumb or finger position on the bars that we are pulling or pushing.  These days there are also a range of tools out there that can be used for grip training i.e. fat gripz, grip balls etc.  These tools can be added to bars, dumbbells, kettlebells etc to add another dimension to our grip training.  As an osteopath I naturally develop strength in the hand and forearms as they are used regularly as part of the manual therapy I deliver within the consults.  However I believe it is also important to train variation of grip strength and incorporate this into my training so that I build further strength and resilience and an ability to adapt to changing environments and task requirements.
