Wall Supported Gluteal Stretch – An Osteopaths Perspective

In the image below you will see one of Principle Four Osteopathy clients demonstrating a wall supported gluteal stretch.  This is one of my preferred gluteal stretch positions for those wishing to perform longer duration stretching of the posterior hip because there is little effort required elsewhere in the body to maintain a comfortable position for > 30 seconds.  Ones spine is also flat on the ground and therefore there is little to no stress placed on it should it be kept in a relative neutral position.  One can also use their free hands to accentuate the stretch by helping assist with some gentle pushing through the knee to increase tension on the posterior hip.   For those individuals with acute lower back pain or a known history of knee or hip complaints that are aggravated by these positions should be avoided.  Other strategies such as modifying the stretch position/hip and knee angle or using a massage ball against the wall might find this more appropriate.
