Transverse Plane Dumbbell Shoulder Mobiliser

There are many great ways to actively move the shoulder as part of a mobility program and the video below is one that I regularly incorporate into my clients shoulder mobility program if they are not in any acute pain.

In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy demonstrating a transverse plane dumbbell shoulder mobiliser.  This exercise can also be performed without a weight and using just the arm to create the same biomechanical reaction.

This exercise is a great because you can have the client self select the movement range that they feel comfortable working through so to avoid any potential end of range pain or discomfort should their be an underlying musculoskeletal complaint.  Should you wish to incorporate the thoracic spine as part of the movement, one can look to rotate the thoracic spine towards the same side as the arm rotation to create a more authentic reaction that would happen in everyday life.
