Training With An Asymmetrical Load

Recently I have started varying up my training by training conventional exercises with objects that are asymmetrical in weight and/or by holding onto a weight only on one side of the body.  Both create different responses in the body and therefore challenge you to adapt to control the object throughout the movement.

Objects with asymmetrical weight distribution such as a mallet or sandbag are great training accessories as you must adapt to this asymmetry when performing conventional training exercises to remain safe.

Below is an example of osteopath Heath Williams using a mallet that is much heavier at the head end during the first phase of the turkish get up.

Performing conventional exercises with only a weight on one side of the body is another way to challenge yourself.  In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy performing a single arm DB reverse lunge.

Next time you are training, be sure to try out some exercises where you either train with an object that has an asymmetrical weight distribution or perform an exercise using only weight on one side of the body.
