Training Movements, Not Muscles – Your Core Is Used In All Exercises

I love it when people say they need to strengthen their core and be given some exercises that focus on their core.  What the hell does this even mean?  What does a weak core even look like?  When ever these discussions come up I will always ask my clients what the core means to them, what do they mean by the core and why do they think they need more core exercises.   Often a good 5-10 minutes is spent trying to de bunk a lot of the crap that is being read on the internet or move them away from this thought of a weaker core and training the core.  A good outcome of discussions will see a positive shift away from the focus on the core and having clients come to understand that all exercises use the core and that a good health and fitness outcome is varied training that is fun, stimulating and challenging.  What this looks like will differ for each and every individual.  For those clients that are fixated on the core, this can be more challenging to deal with and often there will be some give and take with regards to giving the client what they want, but also what will be of benefit to them based on their presentation, goals and assessment findings.   Anyways, just a short rant from me as I have literally had 4 people this week already bring this up in discussion.
