Top 4 Tips For Managing Shoulder Pain

Osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy has given us his Top 4 Tips For Managing Shoulder Pain.

Top 4 Tips For Managing Shoulder Pain

  1. Find out what is causing your shoulder pain.  Shoulder pain can occur as a result of an injury to the shoulder i.e. AC joint injury, rotator cuff strain/tendinitis, biceps tear/tendinitis, adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), bursitis and referral from the neck.  Be sure to see your GP, Osteopath or Physiotherapist to have it assessed so that you can undertake the right treatment and management plan.
  2. Identify what aggravates your shoulder and causes pain.  Common positions or activities that aggravate shoulder injuries include:  sleeping on the sore shoulder at night.  sleeping on the stomach with the arm above head and lifting the arm above 90 degrees of flexion.  If these movements or positions aggravate your shoulder, avoid where possible.
  3. Try cooling your shoulder with a bag of ice to help with pain modulation and to reduce any inflammation. Be sure to avoid placing ice directly on the skin to avoid burning yourself.
  4. Try some gentle stretches or mobility exercises to see if this help reduce any tightness around the shoulder.  Check out some of the links below to find out what you could do.  Note:  Please see your Osteopath or Physiotherapist to find out if these stretches and mobility exercises are suitable for you.
