Osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy gives us his Top 5 Laptop Ergonomic Tips.

  1. Avoid using the laptop for prolonged periods of time on the couch, in bed or at the kitchen table.  Where possible, use your laptop in a designated work area with an ergonomic chair and office desk.
  2. Where possible, try plugging a separate keyboard and mouse into your laptop so that you can separate yourself from it.  This means that you will be able to push the laptop screen back to arms length away and place yourself in a position where you can improve your typing and mouse posture.
  3. When manual handling your laptop, be sure to use a back pack or laptop bag that is comfortable and allows you to handle it with good posture.  If you are required to carry your laptop for extended periods of time, opt for a back pack that is fitted to you and allows you to carry the weight close to your midline and symmetrically.  Carrying laptops in laptop satchel bags over the shoulder for long distances may result in your developing musculoskeletal aches and pains.
  4. When using the laptop for periods greater than 30 minutes, make a conscious effort to have a 5 minute break every 30 minutes.  Laptops were designed as portable tools that should only be used for short periods of time.  If your work requires you to perform > 1-2 hours of work on the laptop per day, then be sure to get yourself a laptop riser, separate keyboard and mouse.
