The Trap Bar Deadlift

The Trap Bar Deadlift is probably one of my favourite go to exercises when I am wanting to introduce some lower body work into the body.  The Trap Bar is often either a diamond shape bar or rectangle shape bar with handles or no handles.  It allows the individual to stand within the bar and their grip on the bar is either side of the body.  The great thing about the Trap Bar design is that one is pulling weight (the bar) from their midline position, rather than a conventional deadlift where the bar sits forward of ones midline.  Therefore it is often easier to get one up and training the lower body because it is often technically easier to teach.

When one performs the Trap Bar Deadlift there is a need for the lower body muscles (hamstrings, glutes, calves, quads) to work.  For some people, they may only ever use the Trap Bar, whereas others will use it as an accessory lift to a conventional or sumo deadlift, rack pull and other hinging movements.

If you would like to find out more about incorporating movements like these into your training program, be sure to book in and see one of the osteopaths at Principle Four Osteopathy.
