Last week Principle Four Osteopathy osteopath Heath Williams flew up to the Gold Coast to attend UK physiotherapist Adam Meakins 1 day course on the shoulder, titled “the shoulder: complex doesn’t have to be complicated”. Adam works as a physiotherapist in the UK and has a special interest in working with people with shoulder complaints.

The course was hosted by my physiotherapist Wade Brennan at Central Physio and Health in Surfers Paradise and we have a great group of practitioners attend that was made up of osteopaths, physiotherapists and exercise physiologists.

There was a lot of great content on the day and lots of take home messages and practical information to implement. These include:

  • Simple doesn’t mean easy and often simple works best for our clients
  • Shoulders fall into 3 categories – stiff, loose, weak/strong
  • Case history should tell you 70-80% of what is going on, followed by assessment and then imaging
  • Treat the person, not the shoulder. Think bps model
  • as practitioners we need to listen more, use less fancy technical bullshit words, focus on strengths rather than faults, build resilience and capacity, not fear, move and load it
  • Old Mrs Miggins is one tough lady who I wouldn’t want to get into an argument with at the pub

Not only did we learn a lot, but we are also now certified by Adam as being Shoulder Rehabbing Machines (HaHa). Read more about Adam @ https://www.thesports.physio/
