Osteopath Heath Williams and Abbas Din of Principle Four Osteopathy have recently been studying the Neil-Asher Technique for the treatment and management of Frozen Shoulder (adhesive capsulitis).

When it comes to shoulder pain and injuries, there are many different structures that can be involved and different types of injuries.  These range from rotator cuff strains, biceps strains, impingement syndromes, subluxation/dislocation injuries, arthritic changes, AC joint sprains, frozen shoulder and much more.

Frozen Shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is one of those conditions resulting in pain in the shoulder and eventual restriction in almost all shoulder ranges of movement.  It is a condition that typically affects women 40-60 years of age.  This does not mean that men won’t suffer from this condition as we have had many in our clinic.  It is a condition that has an unknown cause, however is more prevalent in those people who have had other shoulder related injuries or trauma.  There is also an increased risk in those who have diabetes and other systemic conditions.  Frozen Shoulder is a condition that has 3 distinct phases.  Phase 1 is pain in the shoulder and a gradual reduction in movement.  Phase 2 is the frozen phase where there is minimal shoulder movement available.  Phase 3 is the thawing phase.  Each phase can last between 3-12 months.

The Neil – Asher technique looks at the treatment of this condition with manual therapy techniques.  Made up of soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy and mobilisations.  It can be and is often combined with other therapy options such as cortisone injections or hydro dilatations.

For those of you who think you are currently suffering from a frozen shoulder or would like to know more about the condition and treatment options, please call 03 9670 9290 to speak to an Osteopath at Principle Four Osteopathy.
