The Goodmorning Exercise

The goodmorning exercise is one of those exercises that require the individual to be able to hip hinge.  This is the same as the romanian deadlift and deadlift movement patterns.  In the goodmorning exercise the barbell is placed on ones shoulder and the individual needs to focus on a posterior shift of their hips and maintaining a neutral spinal position. It is a great exercise for those wanting to develop strength through their lower back, gluteals and hamstrings.  For beginners we will often start with body weight hinging patterns and the osteopath may use a variety of strategies to teach the individual to perform this correctly.  Once this develops we may progress to some powerband goodmornings and then to a weight.

In the video below we have osteopath Heath Williams demonstrating a goodmorning exercise with barbell.

If you would like to find out more about adding hip hinging patterned exercises to your training program and are wanting to develop posterior chain strength, then be sure to touch base with one of the osteopaths at Principle Four Osteopathy.
