The Front Squat

In the video below we see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy demonstrating a front squat. In this video you will see that he has crossed his arms across his AC joints and is resting the bar across his shoulders.  The main reason this technique is often adopted is because individuals with shoulder or wrist joint restrictions are not able to rack the bar.

The front squat is a great exercise to perform because it trains the lower body whilst maintaining a solid upright trunk position.  The front squat will generally place more training load through the quadricep muscles compared to a back squat.

Tips To Performing This Movement

  • Rack the bar safely across the shoulders.
  • Maintain parallel arms to the floor throughout the exercises (elbows up)
  • Maintain and upright trunk and neutral head position.
  • Work to a range of motion that is safe and does not compromise the back (in this video you will see this is just below 90 degrees parallel for myself.  Any deeper and my lower back will round).
  • Keep the torso/abs tight.
  • Keep the knees out and open up through the hips.
