The Box Squat

The Box Squat is one of those great exercises to implement into anyones program who are looking to add variation to their squatting routine and are also wanting to increase the posterior chain load.  Due to the nature of the box squat exercise requiring the individual to sit back onto the box, this places an increased training load through the gluteals and hamstrings.  In the video below we have osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy demonstrating the box squat.

Coaching Tips For The Box Squat

  • Start the box at a height where the thigh is parallel to the ground or slightly above for the beginner.
  • Aim for the shins to be vertical to the ground throughout the downward phase, touch phase and pushing up phase.
  • Keep the knees out and screw the feet into the ground to keep the gluteals tight.
  • Maintain a neutral spine.
  • Avoid rocking out of the touch phase.
