Step Up Exercise – Varying Your Step Up Pattern

The step up is a great exercise for building strength and control through the lower body as well as being a movement that we will often perform many times throughout the day (that is if you walk up stairs etc).  The anterior step up is by far the most commonly prescribed step up exercise that I see in the strength and conditioning and fitness world. I am very much a believer in building ones ability to adapt and load through the body across multiple planes of movement and therefore I will often incorporate the lateral and rotational step up into ones training program in order to create a constantly varying training stimulus.  These exercises are usually prescribed with sub maximal training loads and the focus is around strength endurance.
