Functional training is the buzz word these days when it comes to exercise prescription and training & conditioning. Functional training can literally mean anything and is dependent upon what we are describing functional as. If we relate functional training to upright movement such as walking and the activities that we perform on a daily basis (squat, step up and down, lunge, sit, push, pull etc), then training should reflect this. If we talk functional in relation to a particular sport, then the training and conditioning should reflect this in some way i.e. movement patterns, physical requirements of the sport i.e. agility, power, speed etc etc.

Here I have demonstrated how personal trainer (Matt) of Jon Weller Personal Training Studio is using the TRX Rip Trainer to mimic movement patterns of various stick/bat type sports i.e. hockey, cricket etc etc. He is integrating a step/lunge with that of the upper body to train this movement skill.
