Split Stance Romanian Deadlift – An Osteopaths Perspective

In the video below you will see physiotherapist Wade Brennan demonstrating a split stance romanian deadlift.  This is a variation on the traditional romanian deadlift which involves standing in a bilateral parallel stance.  For those individuals who are looking to improve strength of their posterior chain and whose life (work, sport or leisure) requires them to perform hip hinge movements i.e. think picking things up from the ground, varying body stance positions in the deadlift and squat pattern will help to improve functional strength in the body in a way that it is often used.  Whilst a big focus of manual handling is on teaching squat and hinge patterns, usually this is trained in a bilateral stance, yet in day to day real life will this ever be the case.  When trying this exercise out, be sure to start with sub maximal loads and work on building range of motion and strength endurance before progressing to more maximal loading patterns.
