Split Kneeling Stance Thoracic Spine Mobiliser

There are many ways to get the thoracic spine moving and this is probably one of my favourite exercises to prescribe because it feeds into so many other areas of the body i.e. shoulder girdle and hip complex as well as the spine.

In this video we see osteopath Heath Williams positioned in the splint kneeling stance and using his arms to drive motion through the body.  As he swings his arm forwards and backwards we can see that there is flexion and extension driving through the hip and spine.  As he drives the arm across his body in the transverse plane we see that there is rotation occurring through the hip and spine.  As he drives his arm over the body in the frontal plane there is abduction/adduction through the hip and side bending through the spine.

You can vary this exercise by changing arm swing direction, angle, speed and resistance. You can also change the starting stance position to increase or decrease potential movement through the hip complex.
