Split Kneeling Stance Single Arm Kettlebell Press

The exercise below that is being performed by one of Principle Four Osteopathy clients at our Melbourne City CBD clinic is one of my favourites as it requires the individual to be able to balance their body with a narrow base of support (requiring great hip and trunk control) whilst pushing a load vertically overhead (therefore adding complexity due to the imbalance in load from left to right sides of the body).  In this circumstance I have prescribed this exercise because I am wanting to build the clients strength with overhead pressing whilst also challenging the rest of his body.  In terms of looking at the spectrum from most stable and isolated i.e.. seated shoulder press fixed plane to unstable and requiring full body control/function (split kneeling stance single arm press as just one example), this exercise challenges the client across many levels and therefore demands greater stability and control and I feel will ultimately benefit him more so.  As you can see the client is required to try and stabilise and should they have not been able to perform this exercise, I would have reduced the load or looked to widen the stance to increase stability.  His focus point is on both the overhead pressing as well as looking to maintain stability.
