What Sort Of Ergonomic Workstation Desk Set Up Do You Have?

The Osteopaths at Principle Four Osteopathy regularly conduct workplace ergonomic risk assessments and training sessions for many of the corporate businesses in the Melbourne City CBD and Melbourne Docklands area. Typically during these sessions we will spend a lot of time educating the worker about how to use their chair and set up their workstation to improve their working posture and reduce the risk of developing musculoskeletal strains and sprains. During these consults we will look to assess and educated on:

  • Desk adjustments.
  • Chair set up & use.
  • Sitting postures and how to be more active throughout the work day.
  • How to perform work tasks throughout the day to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal strains and sprains.
  • Where to place the keyboard, mouse, document holder, footrest, monitor and other work related tools to optimise working postures.

Whilst there are some general guidelines around workplace desk ergonomics, it is also very important to consider worker comfort.  There is no point forcing a worker into a posture or adjusting their workstation if it is going to cause discomfort.  It must also be stated to the worker that often changes to the workstation will feel strange for a few days as they have typically adopted working habits that aren’t necessarily the best for their body. Below is an image that provides a general overview of how a workstation and desk should be set up.
