The single leg RDL with toe touch is one of my go to exercise variations for those who I am wanting to incorporate single leg loading through the posterior chain and the individual is challenged in their balance or ability to perform a sound single leg RDL with only foot on the ground. In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy performing a single leg RDL with toe touch whilst integrating a bent over row. If we ignore the row aspect of the movement and focus on the grounded leg and trunk, the aim is to maintain a relative neutral trunk position whilst moving the hips back posteriorly with the pelvis relatively parallel to the floor. This will load up the gluteals and hamstring muscle of the grounded leg. The added stability of the toe touch allows the individual to be able to perform the movement with less need to balance the body.
