Single Leg Balance Reach Exercise – Building Balance and Control

In the image below you will see one of Principle Four Osteopathy clients performing a wall assisted (hand touching wall to provide stability) single leg balance reach exercise (using the non weight bearing foot to reach as far as they can and toe touch – providing sense of support and stability) across the sagittal, frontal and transverse plane.  This is a regression from the single leg balance reach without toe touch and wall support.  The next progression on this exercise will be to look at removing either the toe touch or wall support. This is a great exercise as it requires the individual to control how their body moves as their centre of gravity moves away from their base of support. In the exercise the individual is using their foot as a driver.  The individual has been prescribed this as part of their daily movement practice because one of their goals was to improve their balance.
