Shoulder Mobility and Stability Exercise

The exercise below is of a Principle Four Osteopathy client who is currently undergoing strength and conditioning of their shoulder following surgery 12 months ago.  This exercise looks somewhat like the first phase of a Turkish Get Up.  I have adapted this exercise to suit the client due other musculoskeletal conditions.

The aim of this is to have them make a fist with their hand and balance their shoe on their fist.  I have asked them to rotate their body to the opposite side of their raised arm to work on gentle mobility and stability through the shoulder girdle.  Rather than using the hand to drive movement through the shoulder girdle, you can see that they driving movement through their body and then into their shoulder girdle.  I chose this exercise for this client because it relatively easy for them to perform and they can self select the range of motion they move through.    I have asked them to perform 2 sets of 8-10 repetitions and will look to progress this to the first phase of the turkish get up once they feel comfortable.
