Seated to Standing Upright Cable Row

In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy demonstrate a seated cable row to standing cable row.  This is a variation on the static seated cable row or standing cable row.   This exercise focuses largely on training the muscles of the back and shoulders and focuses on pulling strength largely in the horizontal direction.  Considerations for this exercise include:

  • Start/Finish position – this exercise can be regressed to the static seated position to increase stability and reduce the complexity of the movement.  Adding the sit to stand movement requires one to control the load through movement.
  • Anchor point – one can change the pulling direction by changing the anchor point i.e floor level, knee height, waist height or shoulder height.  Changes in this position will result in the pulling muscles working differently.
  • Pulling arm – this exercise here is demonstrated with a bilateral arm pull.  This could also be changed to include a single arm pull (cable or rope) which requires one to resist the rotational pull of the load across the midline.
  • Load – this exercise is usually prescribed for strength – endurance and rep ranges of 8+ are usually prescribed.
