I have just had my 9 year old client in with her mum today after having been prescribed a brace for her scoliosis. This is the first appointment that i have seen her since my referral to her GP. This client presented to the clinic approximately 12 months ago for a general check up. On active assessment she demonstrated to have quite a marked scoliosis that I thought required a referral for plain film imaging. The radiologist report revealed a marked scoliosis with a Cobb angle significant enough to require further assessment. Whilst scoliosis are very common in the general population, it is especially important to assess and keep an eye on scoliosis in children and teenagers who will be going through quite a large growth spurt. Often it is the physical therapist who picks up on the scoliosis as clothing can hide these structural presentations very well. I would suggest that if you are not sure about your children or teenagers posture, then have it assessed by an Osteopath. We will be able to provide simple advice on postural exercises and referral if required.
