Scapular Exercise Drills – An Osteopaths Perspective

The overhead press/pull and horizontal press/pull are the most commonly performed upper body movements in the resistance training world.  Often there needs to be a focus on isolated parts of the body at times within a rehab or performance program.  In the videos below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy performing a single arm bent over horizontal scapular pull (all movement aiming to come from the shoulder girdle i.e. no elbow bend) and an overhead single arm kettlebell elevation/depression movement (again aiming for minimal elbow bend).  When it comes to pulling movements, often locking down on the scapular can be a good strategy to create tension and a solid base of support).  One may look to perform 3-4 sets of 10-15 reps in the early part of ones program i.e. warm up or at the end of ones program for some additional accessory conditioning work.
