Quick Assessment For Shoulder Mobility

There are many ways to assess ones shoulder mobility and below is an example of one test that I will often utilise because it is quick and easy.  To carry out this assessment, all you need is a dowel stick to hold onto.  Start by having the individual lie flat on the ground with their forehead flat.  Ask them to raise their arms up off the floor whilst keeping their head flat on the floor.  This ensures that the individual is performing the movement through their shoulders and will assess overhead range of motion.  Failure to keep the torso on the ground may give you a false reading.  Very quickly you will learn whether the individual has adequate range of motion to perform overhead movements.  When performing this test, make sure you are aware of any discomfort or pain as this may require further assessment.
