Powerband Hip Extension

The powerband hip extension exercise is a great one to perform as part of your movement prep or to get a client focusing on hip extension and using their glutes rather than performing inefficient movement or under recruiting their big hip extensor muscles.

In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy performing a powerband hip extension movement using the 41 inch yellow band from Ironedge.  Should you not have a powerband, this exercise can be performing using tubing, theraband or the equivalent.

The idea is to maintain a straight leg and have the individual focus on keep the leg straight and extending from the hip rather than through the back or with a bent knee.  The client should be focused on using their glute througout the movement.  From a sagittal view point, they should try to maintain a straight leg/foot and avoid external rotation through the leg which is a common movement pattern strategy that people with adopt.  In this video you will see Heath place the foot down at the mid phase point of the exercise, to advance this, have the person not touch the ground during the mid point of the exercise.
