Powerband Hip Abduction Exercise

In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy performing a standing powerband hip abduction exercise.  The idea behind this exercise is to focus on engaging the lateral hip muscles (glutes) in the frontal plane. This exercise can be used as part of a prehab or rehab program or within someones movement preparation phase prior to training the lower body in the gym.

The aim is to maintain a straight leg with the band wrapped around the ankle.  In this video Heath is using a 41 inch yellow powerband from IronEdge.  The aim is to maintain a straight leg and abduct or move it laterally whilst maintaining a neutral foot position.  Common errors are usually associated with not maintaining a straight leg, externally rotating the foot or using a band that is too heavy in resistance.
