Posterior Cable Fly – An Osteopaths Perspective

In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy performing a cable posterior fly with active shoulder abduction.  The posterior cable fly is a great exercise for those looking to develop strength in their posterior shoulder girdle and back.  Heath has added an active abduction movement of the arm whilst maintaining tension through the back and shoulder girdle as a way of adding isometric loading as ones arm moves through abduction.    Typically I will look to add some variation of a posterior fly to ones training program if they are regularly training to compliment horizontal and vertical pulling exercises.   Typically these exercises are prescribed at lower loads and performed with higher reps 10+.  The long lever effect of the arm means that low loads can become quite challenging even for the stronger clients if performed appropriately.
