Partial Range Push Ups

Performing exercises through a partial range can be beneficial for those individuals who have a history of full range exercises aggravating their complaint or where they are needing to build up strength through a particular range of motion  In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy performing a partial range push up (using the medicine ball as a contact point on the chest to limit the range of motion).  This was a demonstration he provided for a client who has a history of shoulder pain that is aggravated by full range push ups as well as dumbbell bench pressing which allows the individual to perform a push movement through a greater range of motion than the barbell.  Rather than stop the individual from training, a med ball push up and floor press were introduced as these movements did not aggravate their complaint.

In many cases an individual can continue to train when exercises can be modified to avoid aggravation of the complaint. Be sure to consult with your practitioner (osteopath, physiotherapist, chiropractor) further when discussing exercises and your injury as often there are solutions around this that can be implemented.
