Oblique Training Exercises

There are many different exercises that one can do to train the obliques, such as lateral plank holds, palof press, side crunches and using the torsonator.  One of my favourites is the wood chop and the many different ways you can vary this.  I will often use the cable pulley machine to train the wood chop movement pattern.  The great thing about this exercise is that you can vary the following to change things up:

  • Starting position – you can stand, kneel, face the pulley and step out and around, be static and not move, as well as many other positions and movements.
  • Resistance, Reps, Sets, Speed of movement.
  • Position of the cable – high, waist height and low start position.
  • Cable attachment such as rope, handle or triceps rope.

Below are some images sourced from google that demonstrate the wood chop in action.
