Moving Beyond Pain – Lower Limb Workshop Series – Grant Burrows Osteopath

Osteopath Grant Burrows yesterday delivered a fantastic 5 hour workshop titled “Moving Beyond Pain” at Everythings Connected in Camberwell.  This was the 4th workshop of the 5 part lower limb series that Principle Four Osteopathy has organized for 2016. Grant Burrows delivered a highly thought provoking, educative and practical workshop that empowered attendees to think about how movement can be used as part of the management strategy for those individuals suffering from chronic pain.  As allied health practitioners (osteopaths) we are regularly seeing chronic pain patients in the private practice setting and over the last 5-10 years there has been a massive shift in how we define, explain and manage clients with chronic pain.  Communication and education of our chronic pain patients has probably been at the forefront of this over the last few years as well as a big focus on getting clients off the passive treatment approaches to more actively involved strategies.   Yesterday Grant took what I believe to be a complex topic and delivered key messages with strategies on how to use movement as part of the management approach of chronic pain patients.

Some of the key learning outcomes and focus from yesterday’s workshop included:

  • Identifying and understanding where the opportunities lie to dealing with neuroplastic change in pain i.e. how can we look to decrease neural sensitivity, howe can we look to increase descending inhibition and how can we look to decrease descending facilitation.
  • Understanding how some chemicals i.e. endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin can help with the management of chronic pain as well as how to facilitate this in a consultation with the client.
  • Understanding and implementing strategies to create neuroplastic change through movement.  This involved looking at mechano and nociceptors, motor patterns and perception of movement.
  • How to successfully identify clients who will benefit and achieve success in managing chronic pain through movement.
  • Case study examples and practical demonstrations on how he implements the above strategies in a clinical setting with his chronic pain clients
