Principle Four Osteopathy recently held an in house movement training workshop with Principle Four Osteopaths Heath Williams, Cathryn Leszczynski and Tim McNamara.  Osteopaths Ben McChesney of Balance Osteopathy South Melbourne and Matt Harris and Shaanika Marguccio of Everything’s Connected Osteopathy in Camberwell also came along to have some fun with movement.

We had the pleasure of having Morgan White of AWEN come in and give us a personal 3.5 hour movement training session that involved all of us getting our sweat on with some mobility and strength training.

Morgan is a patient of Principle Four Osteopathy who has a very unique approach to training and moving and the simplest way to sum it up is to call it a cross between calisthenics, gymnastics, circus performance, yoga, bodyweight training and martial arts.

We learnt many new ways to mobilise the body and how to start training the body and developing our strength only using our own bodyweight, ground reaction force and gravity.  The training was three dimensional and involved us moving and training the body in all directions.  The great thing about this training was that the person carrying out the movement training self selects what range, depth, speed and position they perform it in and therefore it can be regressed or progressed to a suitable level for all.

Key Take Away Points From AWEN Movement Workshop

  • All movements have a beginning, a middle and end.
  • There are no bad movements, just bad understanding.
  • Challenges within movement include: Body awareness (co-ordination and spatial awareness), Strength, Flexibility/Range of motion and Mobility (mix of strength and flexibility)

Some Video Examples From The Day

Our warm up included everything from the neck to shoulders to arms to fingers and spine to hips to knees to feet and ankles.

Our Low Intensity/Warm Up included:

  • Ankle mobility
  • Squat mobility
  • Posting and flagging
  • Bridging
  • Sitting
  • Sequenced movements of the above

Our main session involved learning the A-Frame as a locomotive and the variations of this.

We would highly recommend anyone and everyone to try out this movement workshop and to start introduce some of the more basic mobility and strength exercises into their everyday workout.
