McGill Big 3 Exercises – An Osteopaths Perspective

In the image below you will see one of Principle Four Osteopathy clients demonstrating regressed versions of the birddog, plank, side plank and deadbug.  These are all exercises focusing on bracing the spine and working all sides of the trunk/core.  We will look to gradually progress these as the client develops competency in these movements and strength/endurance.  In addition to this we have educated the client on avoidance of aggravating postures and movements that aggravate his lower back and have started focusing on altering movement patterns for picking things up off the floor, transitioning from sit to stand i.e. squat, lunge and hinge movements.  The key here initially is to work around their complaint so that they can continue to function whilst minimising their risk to flare ups.
