Manual Handling Considerations From Your Boot

In the videos below you will see physiotherapist Wade Brennan of Corporate Work Health Australia demonstrating two different manual handling techniques of a container from the boot of his car.  In one video you will see a more efficient technique for the body which involves getting close to the boot, sliding the box close to him and then lifting.  In the other video (less perfect technique which may increase ones risk of musculoskeletal pain) you will see him reach and lift the box as a deadweight with the object being some distance away from him.  The weight of the box and the leverage effect on his body means his upper limb and spine are bearing the brunt of the load.  Next time you load your boot and unload it, make sure you opt for a technique that allows you to get close to the object and limits lifting of the load away from the body.
