Lateral Single Leg Box Step Up

I am a big believer in including single unilateral leg work into ones training program as we as humans perform many activities loading or biasing load towards one side of the body i.e. walking up and down stairs, lunging etc.  Unilateral work also helps an individual to identify and work on improving where there might be an imbalance in strength, mobility and control.

In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy performing a lateral single leg step up.  Typically step ups are performed in the sagittal plane (moving forward) and in the vertical axis (onto a box).  The lateral step up (frontal plane) bias places a different demand on the individual and therefore will emphasise those frontal plane muscles more so than an anterior (sagittal plane) step up.

If you are currently training then I would encourage you to build some unilateral work (step up, step down, lunge, bulgarian split squat) work into your everyday training program.  It can be part of your movement prep phase or main working sets.
