Just Hanging Around For The Back

When it comes to training the body in the gym we will often see a great deal of pushing or pulling movements for the upper body.  Rarely do we see hanging as part of ones training program.  This can be a passive deadhang (just hanging without any scapulothoracic involvement) or an active hang (scapulthoracic loading).  Recently I have started adding in some active and passive hanging into my back routine so that I can build strength and conditioning into my grip and forearms, but to also provide also to provide some traction and opening up through my back compared to counter all off the compression/loading/pushing and pulling movements that I have always completed.

Next time you are in the gym, try and perform 3-4 sets of a 30-60 second dead hang and I promise you it will be more difficult that you perhaps think it should be to start off with, yet feel great for the shoulders.
