Jaw pain, also known as Temporomandibular joint pain or dysfunction is an intermittent or chronic condition affecting the jaw.  Some clients may report symptoms such as pain around the jaw, tension and tenderness in the muscles of the jaw and jaw headaches. Usually this is noticed during movements of the jaw such as talking, eating, yawning, but it can be treated by osteopathic TMJ treatment.

Osteopaths can assess the motion of the jaw and palpate the muscles of the jaw for tension and tenderness. Treatment of TMJ pain by the osteopath can include:

  • Improving the motion of the TMJ.
  • Reducing tension in the muscles involved with the TMJ i.e. masseter, pterygoids, and temporalis muscles through TMJ osteopathic manipulation.
  • Prescribe exercises to help with normalising TMJ movement through TMJ osteopathic treatment.

You’re probably wondering, can an osteopath help with TMJ? Typically your osteopath will also assess your neck (cervical spine) and upper back (thoracic spine) and all the muscles around these areas to identify if these areas might be contributing to the complaint through osteopathy for TMJ pain.

Your osteopath may also refer you to your dentist to an orthodontist for further dental assessment and investigation in some circumstances.
