Improving Movement Quality / Simple Strategies

I am very much a believer in there being no such thing as a bad exercise or movement, with the key thing being what is the reasoning behind why an exercise or movement is prescribed and performed a particular way.  There are times that I do try to focus on improving the quality of the movement though due to a number of reasons, these being:

  1.  Improve efficiency of movement for the client (make it easier and cleaner – my subjective opinion on this)
  2.  I am trying to build capacity i.e. strength, endurance, power, hypertrophy in that particular movement or muscles being used within that particular exercise
  3. Reinforce a movement pattern that is going to be optimal for the client with less risk of injury i.e. especially if they are going to be handling maximal loads etc.

In the image below you will see a couple of different strategies where I provide initially a band resistance (external cue) that wants to amplify the individuals movement issue that i am trying to correct (knee moving inwards).  Once they have mastered this I usually progress to body weight and then using external loads (in this case asymmetrical kettlebell load) that requires the individual to balance themselves against the pulling of the load with gravity.  Now these strategies are only just a few ways of approaching a challenge like this and I would recommend you explore and try these and others to see what works best for you and your client.
