The Importance and Confidence Ruler

The importance and confidence ruler is a simple scoring system that gets us or our clients scoring 0 (not important) to 10 (very important) on the following two questions:

  1. On a scale of 1 – 10, how important is it that you (YOUR GOAL) at this time?
  2. How confident do you feel that you can (YOUR GOAL) at this time?

This has been a massive GAME CHANGER in terms of the consultation process that I have with my clients because it has allowed me to sift through a range of goals that the client might express over the consultation and determine which ones are most important and which ones do they feel most confident about.  These questionnaires were taught to me on the Level 1 Wellness Coaching Course by Wellness Coaching Australia and ultimately we were advised that anything less than a 6 will be tough to work with, compared to those who answer 7 or above.  Ideally the client who answers 9 or 10 on both these questions will be easier to work with because the desire and confidence is there to change.

Next time you are thinking about change, ask yourself these two questions.  If you answer less than 7, then change your goal and ask yourself the question again.  Once you score >7 on both of these, then you have something to work with.
