High to Low Reverse Cable Pull

In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy demonstrating a high to low reverse cable pull.  The reverse pull or fly is a great exercise for training the muscles of the back and shoulder girdle.  This exercise and variations of this exercise are commonly prescribed as an accessory training exercise in ones back routine to focus on the trap, lev.scap, rhomboids, deltoids, rotator cuff and other muscles of the back and shoulder girdle.  It is also good for those regular gym attendees who sit at a desk all day.

Common variations on this exercise can include:

  • Start position – one can perform this seated, kneeling (bilateral kneeling), split stance kneeling or in a static split stance standing position or bilateral standing position.
  • Cable attachment position – varying the pull angle i.e. height of the anchor will place different demands on the body  and therefore change the focus of the pull on the back.
  • Load – typically this exercise is performed for strength – hypertrophy – endurance and rep ranges of 8-15 will be prescribed.  Tempo will vary accordingly also.
